What is the maximum distance that Gigabit Ethernet can be transmitted over multimode fibre?

Generally accepted standards determine that the maximum transmission distances for Gigabit Ethernet over multimode fibre are:

  • 50/125 550 metres
  • 62.5/125 225 metres

However, recent developments in laser technology have now enabled transmission distances of 2000 metres for both fibre types by the use of specific optical devices.
